Backlinks Notification in Blogger

When readers post comments in your Blog, you will be notified. How about backlinks? Do you want Blogger to notify you when people write a post and link to you? Although it is not an option available in the Dashboard, it is possible to work around this and be notified whenever you receive a backlink.

Backlinks

By definition, backlinks are incoming or inbound links to your Blog. If you have a lot of backlinks, it shows that your posts have been talked about or referred to by many sites, an indication that the posts are noteworthy, popular or important. Links can come from any site, but for the purposes of our article, we are interested in the links from sites that are indexed by Blogger search engine. This is because we want to be informed by Blogger when someone links to us, and the only way Blogger knows is when that site is in their index and crawled by their spiders.

Email Notification

If it were comments, you can set an email address under Settings -> Comments -> Comment Notification Address, to be informed when someone comments on your Blog. To do the same for backlinks, first enter this URL into the internet browser:-

http://blogsearch.google.com/?ui=blg

This will bring you to the Google Blog Search interface. Next, enter this URL into that search box:-

link:http://blogname.blogspot.com

Replace the part in red with your BLOG URL. The results will show you a list of sites that have linked to your blog. Scroll to the bottom. You will see this:-

Backlinks Notification in Blogger

You have several options, such as having an email alert when someone links to the Blog, or subscribe to the Blog Search feed to view it in Google Reader. Pick the one that you like and you will receive notification from Blogger whenever someone creates a backlink to your Blog.

I am not sure if the backlinks feature on my blog works as I am not using a Blogger template (third party). Should I be adding something else in the code?

This is SO useful to me, thank you very much for posting about this here.

I will soon post a response in my own blog with a link back to your post.

Best wishes,

Google may have dropped this option? All I can find is a subscription to the RRS; no e-mail notification :-(

There is an email alert at the bottom. Scroll down the page.

i'd love to get backlink notification from all blogs (ie. wordpress, typepad, etc.), not just from blogger blogs. is that possible?
