If you are new to Blogger software, once your Blog is up and running, you will see some strange icons. One is a picture of a pencil at the Post Footer and another is a screwdriver and wrench icon at the bottom right corner of every widget. Is there a way to disable them? Why are they there in the first place? Don't they look unsightly in the Blog design?
Allay your fears. However unsightly they may seem, nobody else can see them other than the author of the Blog and only when logged into the Blogger account. Once you are logged out, clear the browser cache or refresh the page and the icons will disappear.
Remove Pencil icons
These icons are there to assist the authors. The pencil icon at the end of the Posts are the links to enable easy quick editing of the Posts.
Sometimes, after we have published our posts, we may go through them and spot some typographical errors or mis-alignment problems. To edit the post, we will have to go to Posting -> Edit Posts and locate the post that we want to edit. This may not be a simple task. In our Famous Quotes blog, for instance, we have more than two thousand posts and counting. To find the post is an uphill task. Quick editing solves all that. When we are looking at the relevant published post, we can easily click the pencil icon at the Footer and it will bring us to the Post Editor screen. We simply edit and re-publish.
If you do not want this feature, go to Settings -> Basic and to the question “Show Quick Editing on your Blog?” answer “No” to remove this pencil icon.
Remove Screwdriver and Wrench icons
At the bottom right corner of each widget, there is a screwdriver and wrench icon. This is the quick edit link which when clicked, will bring you to the Page Element edit screen.
Without this icon, you can go to Template -> Page Elements and click the element to be edited. The disadvantage is that for people who have inserted a lot of pictures and HTML/JavaScript widgets, which usually carry no titles, it will take a while to locate the correct widget. It is much easier to click the quick edit icons on the Blog page.
Even then, if you still choose not to have this screwdriver and wrench icon displayed, go to Template -> Edit HTML and after a } sign, insert this additional code:-
.quickedit { display:none; } |
|---|
Save the template. You will not see the screwdriver and wrench quick edit icon even when you are logged into your Blogger account.

You write, "Allay your fears. However unsightly they may seem, nobody else can see them other than the author of the Blog and only when logged into the Blogger account. I cleared cache, logged out, went to my custom site like anyone else might: there they were. Those damned unsightly wrench/screwdriver icons. What to do???

Hi Elise Bon-Rudin, EdD
I looked at your site and have even uploaded a screen capture of your site here:-

I cannot see any wrench icon and I believe anybody else looking at your site will not see it too.
If you do not believe your eyes, then look elsewhere for your solution and to vent your unwarranted frustration.
Is there any way I can use my own icons instead of the pencil and the hammer and screwdriver default?
Great blog by the way, extremely helpful!
Bizwhiz,
I have to agree with Elsie. I could still see the wrench incons as well- even logged out with the cache cleared. I have been trying to get rid of them for a couple of weeks. But, thanks to you they are gone!!! Yay!!! I no longer see those ugly wrenches. Ugh.
I am still working on my blog and have a LONG way to go but I am so glad I have your blog to guide me along. Thanks.
Hello bizwhiz! I'm also still seeing the screwdriver/wrench icons when logged out and the cache is cleared. Today I tried accessing the site at my husband's workplace where I have never logged in and the site still has the wrench icon. Have you had any other people with this problem?
Thanks so much,
Steph Bond

Thank you! thank you! thank you! Those icons have been driving me nuts for so long. I hate seeing them when I'm logged in. Thank you so much!
Hi,
For some reason my little quick edit pencil is not there on one of my blogs- one that i have been very busy tweaking, with the help of your great site! Not to mention background tweaks. I do have it enabled in the settings. I am not sure what to try- any suggestions?
I did try to copy and paste a quick edit section of code on my other blog- but i have no idea where that particular code ends.
Thanks,
Tessa
hi
can you please tell us how to add the quick edit option for posts ?
or the HTML code for adding it.
Thank you !
Thank you, thank you! I found only one other blog "tips" site which recommended removing ALL occurrences of the "include quickedit" lines, but for me, who has multiple gadgets/widgets, it's a pain every time I add a new one. Thanks a million for this quicker shortcut! (This option, like removing the "pencil" post quickedit, REALLY should be built into Blogger...sheesh.)
My fears cannot be allayed as long as my blog is under an aggregator whose ten editors have an easy access to see the screwdriver-wrench icon and click it to access my blog and alter my entries and setting and layout.
I have something to say ...
